General Care Nursing
Representing the largest cohort of nursing students in Luxembourg — future Infirmiers Responsables de Soins Généraux forming the backbone of the national healthcare system.
The foundation of nursing
The IRSG Commission represents students pursuing the Infirmier Responsable de Soins Généraux qualification — the initial training that forms the gateway to the entire nursing profession in Luxembourg.
Unlike the specialisation commissions, the IRSG Commission covers the largest and most diverse student population. These students train across every clinical environment — from medical and surgical wards to emergency departments, community care, and long-term care facilities.
The commission serves as a bridge between students and institutions, ensuring that the voices of those in initial training are heard alongside those pursuing specialisations. As the entry point to nursing, the quality of IRSG education directly shapes the future of every nursing career in the Grand Duchy.
Training Pathways
Luxembourg offers two distinct routes to become a nurse responsible for general care.
Université du Luxembourg
A 3-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (180 ECTS) launched in 2024, offering university-level education with a strong research component and evidence-based practice foundation.
Accessible directly after secondary education. Includes over 2,300 hours of clinical placement across medicine, surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, and community settings.
ENSA
The established 4-year pathway through the École Nationale de Santé du Luxembourg, combining 2 years under the Ministry of Education and 2 years under the Ministry of Higher Education.
A practice-oriented programme with training centres in Strassen, Bascharage, and Ettelbruck. Conforms to EU Directive 2005/36/CE for automatic diploma recognition across member states.
The Team
Commission members dedicated to representing general care nursing students.
Commission Goals
Student Representation
Give a collective voice to IRSG students in discussions with the ENSA, the Université du Luxembourg, clinical placement sites, and health authorities about training quality and student welfare.
Placement Quality
Work with hospitals and care facilities to ensure clinical placements offer structured, supervised, and meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for real-world nursing practice.
Pathway Equity
Advocate for equitable recognition and opportunities for students regardless of whether they follow the BTS (ENSA) or Bachelor (Uni.lu) pathway, ensuring both routes lead to equally valued qualifications.
Career Guidance
Help IRSG students understand the full range of career possibilities after qualification, including the four available specialisations, hospital and community nursing, management, education, and research paths.
Peer Mentoring
Connect students across different years and training institutions through study groups, mentoring partnerships, and shared-experience events to strengthen solidarity and reduce isolation.
Curriculum Feedback
Collect structured student feedback on both the ENSA and Uni.lu programmes and relay constructive proposals to the institutions for continuous improvement of nursing education.
Missions & Progress
Commission Establishment & Governance
Formalised the commission structure, appointed its president and members, and established operating procedures aligned with NSA Luxembourg's internal regulations.
Mapping of IRSG Training Landscape
Documented the full IRSG training ecosystem across Luxembourg — both ENSA campuses (Strassen, Bascharage, Ettelbruck) and the new Uni.lu Bachelor — including clinical placement sites, curricula differences, and student numbers.
ENSA & Uni.lu Student Liaison
Building bridges between students enrolled in the BTS pathway at ENSA and those in the new Bachelor programme at the university, fostering exchange and mutual understanding across both training routes.
Clinical Placement Feedback System
Developing a structured framework for IRSG students to evaluate their clinical placement experiences, with the goal of identifying best practices and flagging areas that need improvement across institutions.
Specialisation Orientation Programme
Creating informational resources and organising meet-and-greet sessions with specialisation students and professionals to help IRSG students explore their post-qualification options in anaesthesia, paediatrics, psychiatry, and ATM surgery.
