Psychiatric Nursing
A specialised working group of NSA Luxembourg dedicated to representing psychiatric nursing students and advancing the recognition of mental health nursing as a cornerstone of Luxembourg's healthcare system.
Championing mental health nursing
The Psychiatry Commission brings together experienced psychiatric nurses and current specialisation students to address the unique challenges and opportunities of mental health nursing in Luxembourg.
Psychiatric nursing demands a distinctive skill set — therapeutic communication, crisis de-escalation, risk assessment, trauma-informed care, and the ability to build long-term therapeutic relationships with patients experiencing complex mental health conditions.
With growing societal awareness of mental health and increasing demand for qualified psychiatric professionals, the commission works to ensure that students are properly supported, recognised, and prepared for one of the most emotionally demanding yet deeply rewarding nursing specialisations.
The Team
Experienced clinicians and students united for psychiatric nursing.
Commission Goals
Student Advocacy
Represent the interests of psychiatric nursing students in discussions with the university, mental health institutions, and health authorities to improve training conditions and placement quality.
Mental Health Awareness
Raise awareness about psychiatric nursing as a specialisation of choice, combating stigma associated with mental health care and highlighting the profession's critical importance in Luxembourg's healthcare landscape.
Clinical Placement Standards
Work with psychiatric institutions to ensure student placements offer safe, supervised, and meaningful learning experiences across acute psychiatry, rehabilitation, forensic care, and community mental health.
Therapeutic Skills Development
Advocate for the integration of evidence-based therapeutic approaches in training, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and de-escalation techniques.
IVS Recognition
Support the broader NSA initiative to establish the "Infirmier en Voie de Spécialisation" (IVS) status, ensuring psychiatric nursing students are properly recognised during their clinical rotations in mental health settings.
Wellbeing & Resilience
Promote strategies for student wellbeing and emotional resilience, recognising that exposure to psychiatric crises, suicidality, and complex trauma demands robust support structures for learners.
Missions & Progress
Commission Establishment & Governance
Formalised the commission structure with president and members, established operating procedures aligned with NSA Luxembourg's internal regulations and engagement charter.
Support for IVS Proposal
Contributed to the association-wide initiative proposing the "Infirmier en Voie de Spécialisation" title to hospital and institution directions, providing input specific to the psychiatric care context and its unique placement settings.
Mapping of Psychiatric Placement Sites
Identified and documented all psychiatric clinical placement sites across Luxembourg, including the CHNP, hospital psychiatric wards, and community mental health services, to provide incoming students with comprehensive orientation resources.
Student Wellbeing Support Framework
Developing resources and peer support mechanisms to help psychiatric nursing students process emotionally challenging clinical experiences, including exposure to acute crises, involuntary admissions, and complex psychopathology.
Collaboration with Psychiatric Institutions
Building partnerships with the CHNP, hospital psychiatric departments, and community mental health organisations to explore joint educational events, case conferences, and training opportunities for students.
Destigmatisation Advocacy
Working on awareness initiatives to highlight the professionalism and expertise of psychiatric nursing, addressing misconceptions about mental health care and promoting the specialisation to prospective nursing students.
Psychiatric Nursing in Luxembourg
The psychiatric nurse (infirmier psychiatrique) is a specialised healthcare professional trained to provide comprehensive mental health care across the full continuum — from acute crisis intervention to long-term rehabilitation and community-based support.
Luxembourg's psychiatric nursing landscape centres around key institutions including the Centre Hospitalier Neuro-Psychiatrique (CHNP) in Ettelbruck, hospital-based psychiatric wards, and a growing network of community mental health services. The field covers diverse areas: adult general psychiatry, psychogeriatrics, juvenile psychiatry, addiction medicine, forensic psychiatry, and psychosomatic care.
Since September 2023, the specialisation is offered at the Université du Luxembourg as a 4-semester Bachelor of Science programme, accepting up to 15 students per cohort. Students can also obtain an Associate Degree in Psychiatry through the ENSA. The growing awareness of mental health needs in Luxembourg society makes qualified psychiatric nurses more essential than ever.
